Handbag Design Tips for Taking Your Purse to the Next Level
If you have just a tinge of interest in designing purses or handbags for women you are probably searching for easy and affordable tips to take your purse to the next level. For many first time handbag designers, the cotton fabric tote with the matching fabric handles in a whimsical print is the initial project engaged in. It is often jazzed up by adding a lovely silk flower pinned to the front. This is really one great way to start and gain confidence in your sewing ability.
This is no place to roost though if it is your passion to sew fabulous purses. You would want to take your designs and certainly your workmanship up a notch as you develop your craft. If you can manage the basic tote purse then you can also sew women’s firm bodied handbags using a home sewing machine. Consider these little additions to give your purse an upgrade from ho-hum to yeah-baby!
Use ready-made purse handles-The selection is huge
A jeweled or wooden brooch pinned to the front
A firm bottom-Stop the sagging for a more professional look
Printed or engraved name plates-Ooh now don’t you look professional!
You would want your purse to look ready-made like something you bought in a store rather than a mama cut and papa stitch project. Other simple enhancements to your casual tote would be the use of:
Top stitching openings
Zippered or magnetic closures
Quality outer fabrics and linings
Purse feet
So what are you looking at in terms of equipment? Your investment is not very large. Chances are you already have everything you need to get the job done.
Your home sewing machine
An awl – to punch holes
Scissors
Many purse makers also do a great job with the outside of their purses but the inside requires the same amount of attention as the outside. Designers should always ensure that they are producing finished work both inside and out. The lining should be pressed if necessary and not looking crinkled.
If there is no purse lining then consider sewing the purse seams with a Serger for a more professional appearance. Ensure that your stitching is consistent. Focus on sewing it right rather than just sewing quickly. An untidy stitch is a sure give-away that the product was not produced with much care. Remember whether it’s the world stage or a craft show you wish to have your products displayed, excellence is the key. If you have not yet arrived the door of excellence, be sure that you have at least left the place where you started from.
